GreyRock Farms Lard Re-Brand

As a result of lost industry in the Rust Belt Region there has been a need for new business. A group of designers, including myself set out to become acquainted with one of these new businesses and find a design opportunity.

We found Greyrock Farm, a CSA (Community Sourced Agriculture) located in Cazenovia, New York. After lengthy conversations both on and off site we found that Matt, the Farm's proprietor, was very conscious about limiting waste.

Matt produced and sold lard rendered from pig fat that used to be waste. He told us that although lard had a relatively negative stigma, it is actually healthier than butter and other cooking oils, when it is sourced from healthy pigs. We then designed a new container that Matt could employ at his CSA that would make lard a more attractive ingredient and hopefully educate and interest people in it.

As a part of this project we had the opportunity to work with the world renowned Corning Museum Glass Lab. The Glass Lab team assisted us in bringing our design into reality.

Our final design is a short and stout jar with a raised pig on one side. It was important that our design was engaging and unique compared to other glass containers. Sparking interest in the consumer would be key in order to educate them about the benefits of cooking with lard. The size of the jar allows for it to be easy to hold and contain an amount of lard that is adequate.

A rounded glass top allows for the stacking of the jars.

A two component lid allows for the replacement of labels denoting the type of lard without being damaged by oils.
